It is striper season again!

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water is stained clear and 63 degrees

The hybrids and stripers have showed up at the dam and for the next month it should be great fishing. If you have never fished there, you don't know what you are missing. There is a flotilla of boats jockeying for position, big fish are hungry and blowing up on the surface, anglers swapping pleasentries, and that is before GA Power starts generating!

It is no secret that when the water starts moving on Oconee, the fish start biting. Sometimes the effect is within minutes. I have a theory about it if you would like for me to share. If not, just look away from the next paragraph.

I think the movement of water has the same effect as tidal movement in saltwater. Our fish have been in this lake since they were an inch long. Just about every day there is some water movement, and on big water days this movement carries shad into very vulnerable places, where the big fish wait on them. You have probably seen the water busting with fish chasing shad on Oconee. That normally occurs during water movement. So, when a fish feels it, he or she understands that it is time to eat, and they normally do.

Flatlined and downlined minnows and shad will be the weapon of choice over the next month. Due to the shad kill it seems like we are having a hard time finding good baits, but I am sure they will show up pretty soon.

If you are interested in catching some of these monsters, give me a call.

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
