Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water is stained and 59
It is time, to get in line, to catch the big fish on Oconee. Striper season is here and it appears they are going to be extra big, hungry, and aggressive this year!
We had a super shad kill over the winter and our linesides just laid around and ate shad like you would not believe. Imagine going to a Ryan's Buffet and never having to leave. The same thing happened to them. You could go down to the south end of the lake during this kill and see 2 inch shad, spinning around on the top of the water as if someone had shocked them. The stripers just scooped them up and now it is showing up on their waistlines.
I took a 2 hour trip with some customers this week in the middle of crappie season and caught the biggest fish of the year. It was a nine pound hybrid and you would not believe what her stomach looked like. She had that same configuration as George Perrys World Record Largemouth, you know, that wide, thick, don't look like they could swim, look! When both fish hit the bait, it sounded like you thew a cinder block in the water behind the boat.
April starts the biggest striper catch of the year as the fish migrate up the Oconee and down to the dam to spawn. There will be thousands of huge fish in these places, ready to eat and as always we start booking up pretty quickly during this time. Our class of 2005 stripers, (the first of the re-stock) should typically be around 13 pounds, however I think they are going to be bigger.
Give me a call or an email if you are interested in going. It is going to be crazy!
Tight Lines
Doug
