Can't wait to get started

Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

October 27, 2008

Water is down 1 foot and clear

The thing is so quick to being on right now, that I can't even tell you. The thing I am talking about is the fall start; our official opening day; of fishing season. Each and every year we all try to jump the gun and get started quicker than what we should. We always have to wait though, until the fish group up and decide they are ready to bulk up for the winter time.

There has been some significant school activity with large fish in the great waters area. There is an island in front of the great waters boathouse and on many afternoons, when the water is being pulled, you can find these fish breaking on top. We always cast a big Zara Spook at them, and normally they can't refuse it.

If you live bait fish you can began looking in the Lick Creek area to fill your tanks. This time of the year the threads around 4 inches work very fine. You can find them around the bridges and in the back of coves in the area. Also remember to throw around the cut through at Hwy 44. The shad love to stack up in that hole.

Down lining shad should be the ticket and I actually saw gulls diving just a few days ago. They are a little early, but that is why we get excited prematurely. All the signs line up and hopefully the fish will notice.

Tight Lines

Doug has been guiding on Lake Oconee for over 10 years. His specialty is trophy Striped and Hybrid Bass, and huge Crappie during certain months. His boat is a Ranger 2300 Bay Series powered by a 225 Yamaha 4-stroke motor. It is spacious and can fish up to 6 people! Lake Oconee is the second largest reservoir in the state of Georgia with over 18,000 surface acres of water. The lake is heavily stocked each year with Striped and Hybrid Bass. Doug tries to catch all of them!
