Lake Oconee - Freshwater Fishing Report

Water Temp is in 60s in lake
45 degrees up river
This has been a wild week for all types of fishing on Lake Oconee. First of all the crappie have been on fire. Over 2 days of fishing we caught over 100, from dinks to a couple that would run 2 pounds.
I normally fish 12 rods out the front of my boat, but the bite was so good we had to drop down to 6 rods just to manage. That is not a fish story nor have I embellished in any way. The crappie fishing has just been that good and it promises to continue for a while. We are using Green and Black Jiffy Jigs, tipped with minnows and fishing about 10 feet over 20 plus feet of water.
The stripers are also doing their thing too. I just spoke with an angler just as I was writing this report and he has boated over 20 this morning, using live bait in the middle of the lake. Down lines seem to be the ticket and the fishing will just keep getting better as the cold winter approaches.
It is during the winter time that some of our largest fish are caught. We have a saying on Oconee and that is, ‘if you want to catch big fish you got to put a lot of clothes on!" Winter is coming sooner than expected and the fish are becoming very accommodating.
