St. Simons Island - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today I got out on the water with Ted and Mandy from Indiana, who wanted to go on a trout and redfish charter. We decided to start the trip out by looking for redfish on the flats behind St. Simons Island, where I have been seeing some really nice schools of redfish.
Once we got to the flats we did see a couple of fish but the tide was a negative low so it was kind of hard to reach them. We stuck it out and were able to cast at a couple but never hooked up. We started out throwing Berkley Gulp new penny jerk baits and ZMAN electric chicken paddle tails. After fishing them for a while with no luck we decided to try out a live shrimp under a popping cork but we had no luck with that either.
Once the tide turned and started coming in pretty good we started hitting some spots looking for trout. The first couple of spots we fished were in 8-10ft of water, we used both live and dead bait but had no luck. The water was still a little dirty from the flood tides so that probably had a lot to do with it. After hitting a few spots we found some water that was a little cleaner and fished it in 2-4ft of water. First cast at this spot we caught a small trout and continued to catch trout, they were tight on the bank sitting on a rip coming off of the point. All of these fish were caught on live shrimp under a popping cork we never caught any on artificial baits today. We fished here up to the last two hours of the incoming tide and caught mostly small trout with a couple of keepers.
After dropping Ted and Mandy off I picked up my wife and son at the dock and went back out on the water. We continued fishing in the rivers and the water really started cleaning up pretty good at the top of the tide.
First spot we went to we got into a really good trout bite. Most of the fish were keepers with a few throw backs but the bite was a lot stronger at the top of the tide. We continued to fish until the tide turned and caught fish almost every where we went. All of those fish were caught in around 5ft of water on live shrimp and none caught on artificial I guess they just wanted the real thing today.
All in all it was a great day we couldn't have asked for better weather and mild temperatures in late December. Hopefully the winter will stay mild and the fish will continue to bite. Check out other fishing reports at http://www.fishssi.com
