Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report
The Redfish and Speckled Trout fishing around the Venice Louisiana area has been consistant. We have been catching some quality Specks at the shallow water petroleum platforms ( 5 to 25 foot depths ). We have caught the Specks on lead heads with large soft plastics. We have not been catching limits of trout, but they have been anywhere from 3-6 pounds. Some times we can not fish the platforms because the wind and seas are too strong to do so. Also, I can not take inexperienced anglers out to the platforms, because they are difficult to fish. You have to be able to cast very close to the structure to get the fish to bite and feel the bite. I am usually on the trolling motor trying to keep the boat in position, so I can not handle retying lures and such. I can not anchor down, because I will probably lose the anchor in the pipes at the bottom. Its difficult to fish, but rewarding when we catch those big fish. The Redfish are out there as well. Most of the big Redfish ( Bullreds )are off the points and beaches downriver from Venice. I have been fishing areas that are less affected by the wind. Once we get to an area the hunt is on. Nervous baitfish and busts on the water eventually reveal where the fish are. The best lure for the Bull Reds has been a oversized soft plastic under a cork. The slot Redfish has been the most difficult fish lately to catch. They are usually cooperative around the cane lined bays surrounding the Venice area. We have had high water levels during the morning, and the Redfish get up in the canes and are more difficult to catch. low tide has been in the evenings, so that is the best time to have the boat where the fish are, but I dont fish at night. The big Reds dont get up inside the canes as much, so we have been catching them steady.
Everyone that has stayed with us has said they really like it here, and have enjoyed the food. Most everyone has been staying for three or four nights, and by the time they leave they are fairly wore out due to the fishing. I have had some really great folks staying over and fishing.
The fishing should continue to be good and I expect June to even get better, particuarly for the coast line Speckled Trout bite. The river is low and is soon going to drop even further. Thanks to everyone, and hope to hear from you soon. Capt. Shawn-out
