Bull redfish in Venice Louisiana

Capt. Shawn Lanier

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

July 14th 2014 report.

Well, it is the same fishing story down here in Venice. The Redfish are around and they are biting most of the time. They are not always in the same location, but we have moved around to different areas, and we are finding them.
This last week, I had Rick, Bill, and Jerry from Missouri fishing with me for three days. These guys have fished with me before and like catching the big Redfish. They have meat in the freezer at home, but not the big Redfish. They are amazed at how fast these Redfish can swim around the boat, and then change direction. We caught a bunch of big Reds everyday (around 40 each day). They are coming back in December.
I also had Dewayne and Linda from Florida come fishing for a couple of days for the big Redfish. This husband and wife team love to fish and are good at fishing. Where they are from has Redfish and Snook, but the Redfish are small. They wanted to see about these big Redfish, and they got it. The first day we had constant action all day, but the second day was slow early then it really turned on after eleven a.m. We had a full moon, so maybe that had something to do with it. Or, maybe it was just me not doing good early, but it was probably the moon. Anyway, they left worn out.
Everyone said they had a great time and will be back. They said the food and lodge were great. They even said I was Ok!
The weather is very hot, so we are getting up early and coming in early afternoon. The pop up thunderstorms are something we have to keep an eye on due to lightning, but the weather is mostly calm. The Mississippi River stage is between 6 and 7 feet, so it is slowly dropping, which should make the water clearer. For me, clearer water means we can start using different kinds of lures to catch fish. The fish can catch up and locate crank baits easier. We can also start fishing in the larger channels of the river when the water drops and slows down. If you like fishing down here, then now is the time to come down. I have all the ice and water you will need on the boat!
