red fishing in Venice Louisiana

Capt. Shawn Lanier
June 25, 2012
Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Mississippi River is very low this Spring, so we have had very clear water in the river and the salt water has moved in. The Redfish and Flounder have moved into the river with this low water, so we have concentrated our fishing in the main river channels. This is particularly beneficial when we have windy conditions, because the Mississippi River does not muddy up very easily due to the wind because it is so deep. This allows us to use our favorite artificial lures to catch Redfish. The Redfish are all along the rocks in the river channels. We pick different areas to drift the rocks using the trolling motor to keep the boat within casting range for our spinner baits and hard plastic lures. The area is so big that every time we go fishing we fish stretches of the river that I have never fished before. It is comparable to fishing a fresh water lake that has rocks and mud banks along it. We have been catching many slot Redfish in the river, but some of the big Bullreds are crushing our lures there as well. Most of the big Redfish are on the outside beaches and points, as they are all year long. The Speckled Trout action has been slow for us. They show up in the river in the fall, when the river is usually at its lowest stage of the year, but it is too hot right now. The trout are on the outside barrier islands and petroleum platforms, which you can't get to on windy days. Fortunately, most of my clients have wanted to target the hard fighting Redfish, so I have not had to keep up with the Specks. October, November and early December are the best months to fish for Specks in the river. Fall is the best time of year for limits of Speckled Trout, but the Redfish action is just as good as the rest of the year, but we can fish for them in the river as well as the outside waters. Every one has said they had a good time fishing down here with me, and many have said they learned alot about how we fish inshore here. I am starting to book some three day fishing packages for fall, so now is a good time to call me for the best dates for that time. Fall is a popular time to fish Venice, because, as usual, the fishing is great, yet the weather is not burning you up. Have a good one, and thanks, Capt Shawn- out.
