Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report
September 16, 2013 Report
The Venice area continues to have solid Redfish action on artificial lures. The water is clear green in most area if the wind does not churn up the water. We have been seeing a lot of fish following the hooked fish at the boat. If we have a chance to drop a lure in the water near these trailing fish, they hit it much of the time. The biggest Redfish this last week was 33 pounds, but we had four more over thirty. We had a bunch of Redfish over twenty. Surprisingly, we caught a lot of fish in the slot (16-27 inches) on the outside of the river where the big fish hang out. Most of the time the smaller Redfish (Spot Tails if you are from the Carolinas) are in the channels of the Mississippi River when the river stage is as low as it is now. We caught a bunch of these keeper Redfish in the river this week as well for those that wanted to target the smaller fish. We have also caught some Speckled Trout this week, but my crew wanted Redfish, so we left them. The Specks should be moving into the river next month where they are fairly easy to target. The fish were not at every spot or area we tried. The early morning bite was kind of slow and it picked up in the late morning and afternoon. Next week it could be just the opposite. Fishing is always a challenge for me. The conditions are always changing, and I try to figure out what the fish want and where they are. I like the first spot to be the honey hole, but the fish do what they want. There are a lot of grey areas when it comes to fishing knowledge instead of black and white.
I do believe we are going to be catching a lot of fish between now and the first of the year. The weather should start cooling down and making it more comfortable to be outside fishing. Next thing will be getting ready for the good wintertime fishing we have here in December, January and February. Until next time, thanks.
Capt. Shawn
