Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report
The Midnight Lump!
The Midnight Lump is just as hot as ever. We have been fishing the same spot since the beginning of February. The tuna action has been unbelievable this year along with Wahoo and Amberjack. We are very lucky to have this kind of fishing so close to shore.
Yesterday, we had Todd Bond and Mike Rose in from Mississippi and Alabama. The weather has not been very cooperative these past few months. They have had to reschedule 3 times in the month of March. I think they are glad they did now.
We headed out yesterday morning despite the dense fog that we have been having down here in South Louisiana. We made it out to the lump in about 1.5 hours and started to chum. Within two minutes we had our first yellowfin on. This fish weighed about 65-70 lbs. which is a lot smaller than we had been catching. I looked at him and said, "he's a nice one but smaller than usual". So, I reached down only holding the gaff in one hand and wouldn't you know it. That smaller than usual fish took off with my 60.00 aftco gaff peeling off drag. We finally managed to get him back to the boat despite the little gaffing incident. This time I reached down with two hands with my 90.00 dollar gaff and brought him over the side. Needless to say my smaller gaff is still in the Gulf somewhere.
We finally ended the day with 12 blackfin and 1 yellowfin. Most of the blackfin averaged 20-25lbs. with one or two going over 25lbs. The sharks and bonita moved in and we couldn't get our baits down to the tuna. So after three hours of fighting fish we decided to call it a day. The fishing down in South Louisiana is on fire right now. Thanks, Capt. Damon McKnight
