Louisiana - Venice & the Gulf of Mexico

Capt. Damon McKnight
October 19, 2003
Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Snappers and Elusive Tunas

Last Thursday we had the bird man and friend from Houston. Tuna was the main target but it has still been very inconsistent. One week it is good and the next it's slow. We left before daylight to try and get on the tuna early, since the bite has been very early and very late in the evening. The guys had to be in early so I knew we wouldn't be able to fish late. Unfortunately the morning started out slow and stayed that that way until we left at noon for some snapper. We did see some 100lb. plus fish rolling when we pulled up to our second spot, but we didn't get a strike. From what I could see they were feeding on a school of pogies. After talking with a few boats that were fishing in our area and they didn't have anything either we headed for the rigs. We caught a limit of Red Snapper in less than 30 minutes. The snapper fishing has been incredible this week with limits coming in very easily for us. The big Tuna are in close but there aren't very many of them yet. The water temp. in the Gulf is still very warm. The best temp. to fish in for Tuna is temps. under 70 degrees. Until the temperature drops don't expect to find them in big numbers in the usual spots during this time of year. It looks like things will be running late again this year just like last year. We had to cancel yesterday due to the weather forecast but it turned out to be not that bad offshore. Keep checking the posts, it won't be long until your reading about all the 100lb. plus tuna fish being caught.
