Louisiana - Venice & the Gulf of Mexico

Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

Venice, offshore

The offshore fishing remains excellent. It was a crazy past four days with caught and lost fish. You always know when the big boys have arrived because there are crushed spirits and heart break along with celebration. On Thurs. we had the Wallace husband and wife crew down from Georgia. They wanted tuna and dolphin and that is what they got. More dolphin than tuna mainly because the dolphin kept getting to the bait before the tuna could. They ended their day at noon with 14 cow and bull dolphin and 1 YFT. On Friday we had the Barnes family. Mr. Barnes came with us in June 2004 and hadn't been back since. When he went last time he caught his limit of 60-80lb. YFT and a blue marlin. I knew this would be hard to beat but with the big boys were here this time and that would make the trip a little different, and it was. Our day started off slow, not a single fish in the boat by noon, not because they weren't there, they were busting around rolling around the boat but they wouldn't bite for us. After talking to another capt. on the radio, he gave me some good info. basically, get your a-- over here now. They are going crazy, is what he said. We pulled up and the monster tuna were crashing all over the place. It didn't take long and we had a double on. 1 on the casting rod and 1 on the live bait rod. The fight was going good until the power pro met the mono. in a twist and the power pro easily sliced thru. the mono. leaving us with one fish. We got him in the boat, about a 110lber. and got the lines back out. 3rd fish on, monster, line broke about 10 minutes into the fight. 4th fish on, another big boy, this fight went about 1.5 hours all the way to the surface. This fish was making huge circles on the surface around the boat, just like big tuna do. They are a whole different fight than the 60-80lbers. Unfortunately, the tuna made 1 little head pop and the hook came out. The guys called it a day and back to the dock we went with the just lost a big fish feeling that most fisherman know about. Makes for a long ride in. On Sat. and Sun. we had the Biedenharn crew. Sat. was rig fishing day and in no time they limited on A.J.'s and snapper. Not to hard to do with the limits these days, but sometimes it is ,so we were happy and back to the dock we went. On Sunday we went chasing after the tuna right back where we left off of on Friday. Pulled up to tuna madness, busting everywhere, 80-100lbers. Looked like it was going to be off the charts and complete madness. Two lines out, two fish on, two fish off. Again, two lines out, 1 fish on, 1 fish off. Again, Two lines out, and this time we got a about a 60lber. in the boat. In the mean time, while casting, we managed to loose two more decent sized YFT on poppers. Just couldn't keep them on. Finally, got another good on on livies. 17yr. old Hudson was in the battle of a lifetime. He didn't weigh but 135lbs. Hudson that is and the fish was almost as big as him. After a 1.5 hour fight and a little help he got the fish up and we got him in the boat. This one was about 115lbs. By then the bite was over. The big fish are here. Plenty of them. We've still got open days in July. The fishing is as good as it gets.
