Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report
August 21, 2012 report
With all the heat here lately I am glad I have not been out on the water half the time. But, when I have been on the water the Redfish (Spot Tail) fishing has been good. Especially, the big Reds. We have struggled some days on the keeper slot Reds. Other days we have done well on the keepers. The biggest Red last week was 28 lbs. We caught a bunch of them over 20lbs. There is no doubt in my mind that the Venice, La. area is the best area in the world for Redfish action. The reason for this is the Mississippi River dumping into the Gulf of Mexico. The Redfish like the murky water better than clear water (80% of the time).
Meanwhile, I have not done anything on the Speckled Trout, nor have I tried. I like catching Speckled Trout, but I concentrate on them In October, November, and December. They are easier to locate, because they are in the river system or on the outer bays. More importantly, they hammer the artificial lures during this time, so we don't have to pretend we are commercial fisherman using live shrimp.
Very important-September and October are the best months to find Tripletail hanging around shallow water structure. We had so much fun last year during this time catching (and losing) Tripletail that I almost could not stand it. You are going to lose about half these fish, because they use their power to go straight back into the structure (gas platforms, pilings, and rocks). They average 10-20 lbs. They get bigger, and they are good to eat. I saw one last week 10 miles up the main river channel. I am going to start targeting them this week (if conditions allow). If you want in on the Triple tail action, now is the time to book a trip. I look forward to hearing from you.
