Venice - Saltwater Fishing Report

January 17, 2013 report
I finally made time for a report for the Venice area fishing. The weather has been terrible here lately. We have had a lot of rain and wind over the last couple of weeks. We also have had fog, especially after the fronts pass through and it warms up. Thick fog. It does not matter what time of year it is; weather can always be an issue. However, just because things look tough does not mean it will be an unproductive day. The fish are still around. The Mississippi River stage has risen since the new year started, and all the Speckled Trout and Redfish have made their way to the outside bays where the water temperature is warmer than inside the river. As the river continues to rise, any Redfish that are still inside will move outside. This is to be expected this time of year. We will most likely be fishing the outside through the Spring, unless there is a drought up north again this new year. The outside cane-lined bays and beaches are where the Redfish will be this winter and spring. They will also hold on the shallow water petroleum platforms, if the wind allows you to get to them. We are using soft plastics under a popping cork as our go to bait, but spinner baits should be productive as well. We will most likely have murky water conditions most of the time, because of the river and wind. That is to be expected, and the Redfish like that anyway-most of the time. The Redfish don't leave because the water is not pretty to us. They like it. So, come on down and get into some great action this winter and Spring. Be careful out there.
Thanks, Capt. Shawn Lanier
