Bluefin tuna to 150 pounds on spinning gear!!!

Capt. Rich Antonino
November 16, 2008
Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report

What can I say? I love tuna fishing and the excitement of hooking into these amazing fish. Period. I do love waiting for them to come by, but doing a little peaceful recon around the SWC (Southwest Corner) isn't bad in good weather. Otherwise, we get in location, cast, and pay our dues. It's all good.

Is today going to be the last day on the water in 2008 for the Black Rose? I hope not, but I pulled the boat from my slip regardless. I can get back in as I always have--trailering it on the good days. No problem. It's almost that time.... But the tuna! But the tuna are still here and the water is still 51 degrees. It could be good for another month if the weather lets us get out there.

Today was a great day on the water. It didn't take us 15 minutes to be into fish and have one on the line. It was a personal day on the water--myself and my friend, Roy Leland. I hooked up first, hooking and landing a really fat, 62" tuna that weighed roughly 140 pounds. Awesome fish. Not 15 minutes later, while Roy was switching lures, I hooked up again. This time, I was on the bow and the fish hit like a freight train. I was almost spooled. We caught up to the fish and I horsed it up. When it saw the boat, it went nuts and dove into 200' of water. Diving straight down, it's tail busted my leader. (it was a short leader as I was casting a very short jigging rod. Using...of course my homemade tuna candy lure---9" blue/silver. The first fish hit a 12" see-through yellow/red interior.) It bit to lose that fish. I think it was much bigger than the first one. We had another hit or two, but no other fish hit metal. Great weather and we were back at the dock by 12:30. Awesome day.

Who knows tuna better than Sushi Joy in Plymouth? No one. They're an amazing little Japanese restaurant in Plymouth off of exit 6 if anyone wants to try eating someplace great. We've always eaten there and I realize how much I have to learn about preparing fish! I'm learning...

Well, don't let this be my last trip if you're there thinking "boy, I'd like to try that". Let me know and I'll try to get you out there if the weather cooperates! See you soon, Capt. Rich Antonino, Black Rose

We're the small charter specialists for private 1-4 person groups and shared charters. We fish where the fish are--cod/haddock on Stellwagen Bank, huge sea bass in Buzzards Bay, bluefin tuna on Stellwagen Bank, sharks off of Martha's Vineyard and Wildcat Knoll, Stripers off of Provincetown. We have a great website; visit us often and meet us as friends. We have lots of fun out there and cater to both the novice and veteran alike. Our rates are great and you don't have to get 6 people!!
