Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report

Great day on the water! It was an extended combo day, starting with tuna and ending with cod, with a little (big) shark thrown in for good measure. We started with a decent swell/chop coming from the N/NW, but the forecast was for it to switch to the E, so that was fine, just a little slower getting out there than normal. We averaged around 20 mph. The tuna bite didn't happen for us, but we did mark great fish and see some fish breaking here and there. After tuna fishing, we headed east and east---deep water to try to hit the pollack. We landed a few here and there, but the big story there was the one shark bait I tossed out for kicks. Within 10 minutes that rod went off and Craig was into a heck of a battle from the bow. It was fun watching him figth from the pulpit as the shark ran and ran. It was a blue shark, but a very large one. 300+ pounds and a battler. Nice release and good to see the 16/0 circle hook in the corner of the fish's mouth. 95% of our sharks are hooked in the corner of the mouth with those hooks.
We made the move to shallower water and had a 2-hour drift. Nothing barnstorming, but good haddock and steady action. Moving again, even shallower, we really hammered the fish for the rest of the day. It was non-stop action on haddock, cod to 20 pounds, and cusk. Great day!
See you out there! Capt. Rich Antonino
