Stellwagen Bank - Saltwater Fishing Report
Great cod and haddock fishing on Stellwagen Bank in shallow water with light tackle Okuma gear!
Today was another shared charter fishing for cod and haddock with light tackle in shallow water on Stellwagen Bank on the Black Rose. The weather was perfect, with light winds and sun all day. The water temp was about 49 degrees and our best fishing took place in 115-120 feet of water. Our drift was perfect, with a nice pitch into the drift was all that was needed to fish our light jigs perfectly. We'll be adding more Okuma T-10's to our arsenal in the next couple of weeks. They performed perfectly and made jigging all day an easy task. http://www.okumafishingteam.com for more info on our tackle.
We had some good afternoon fishing today, that's for sure. Perhaps the fishing there was good all day, but when we got there at 1:00 it was amazing. Lots of keepers came over the rails, with all fishermen hooked up at the same time many times. We had some spark plug issues to start the day, delaying our departure by 75 minutes. Then, seeing 5 flares around 11:00, I made the decision to stop fishing and work with the Coast Guard. We ended up running about 20 miles towards the flares and stopped searching when helicopters were dispatched. I never did hear about any results. It did, however, put our final departure time off by a good deal more time. That was a good thing, though, as we did finally find the fish on the Northern Part of Stellwagen Bank.
Keep checking our website for more trip info. We'll start fishing for sea bass next week. The hot weather this week will drive those fish inshore and 'into the mood' really quick. The action should be great. Right now, fishing on top of Stellwagen with light gear is as fun as cod fishing can be! Give us a call at 508-269-1882--Capt.
