Capt. Jose Edmundo Paniagua
August 23, 2024
Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fishing conditions have been productive, with no bad weather over the past week. Pelagic fish are still within close range, starting at 5 to 8 miles out. 🌊🐟🔥

This week's fishing report shows continued strong conditions, with no adverse weather over the past week. Pelagic species, including Striped Marlin, small tuna schools, Mahi, and some Wahoo, are being found as close as 5 to 8 miles offshore. The action ranges from just a few miles out to the 95 and 1150 spots, extending farther south and southeast up to 35 miles. Water temperatures continue to break, ranging between 80°F and 86°F (25°C to 30°C).

Weather Forecast:
Expect calm and favorable fishing conditions in Cabo San Lucas, with steady water temperatures. Light winds and clear skies should provide excellent opportunities for catching pelagic species close to shore.

Species Highlights:

The Striped Marlin bite has been intensifying at the 95 and 1150 spots, Bait fish remains abundant offshore. These powerful predators are on the hunt, they remain unpredictable with some attacking lures, others rigged dead bait, and live bait. Though catches are becoming more frequent, and anglers are using a range of tactics like teasers and dredges, They have been feeding well and have been constantly putting up long fights.

Roosterfish: The bite has been slowing down, although successful catches are still being reported inshore. Most of these fish are spread out, from the lighthouse north several miles.

Wahoo: The bite has slowed down, but there are still some Wahoo patrolling the waters off Cabo. These elusive predators are currently hitting trolling lures, with a few catches reported this week.

Mahi Mahi: Mahi bite remains scarce, catches have been scarce with no major schools reported. We have landed some nice Mahi while fishing for billfish offshore.

Tuna: The action is heating up offshore near the temperature break, where the currents meet, about 10 to 30 miles out. These powerful fish are hammering medium-sized lures on the first pass, and even the smaller tuna are getting in on the action, eagerly biting on kingbusters when using light tackle.

Sailfish: They are still here and several have been caught throughout the week while targeting Marlin.

Blue Marlin: They are offshore and are found crusing warm water currents while targeting billfish on top water or while searching for tuna offshore.

Notes:

The marlin bite remains steady this week in Cabo, especially at the 95 and 1150 spots. Striped marlin are abundant though tough to hookup in the last few days, aggressively feeding on lures, rigged dead bait, and live bait. While many are being caught closer to shore, these fish remain elusive, with not all taking the bait. Sailfish are also adding to the excitement, striking in the same areas. Wahoo and tuna are actively patrolling the waters offshore, with wahoo hitting a variety of lures and tuna holding near temperature breaks 10 to 30 miles out. Roosterfish are spread out along the coast, with catches reported from near the lighthouse to the Marina. With such diverse species and active conditions, it's the perfect time for anglers to head out and experience the action. As few boats are going out this time of year.

The experienced crews at Fin Chaser Sportfishing are well-prepared to navigate these conditions, ensuring an exceptional fishing experience for our guests. Alongside marlin, anglers in Cabo San Lucas are enjoying excellent overall fishing conditions. Reports indicate a healthy mix of dorado (mahi-mahi), yellowfin tuna, and wahoo. The striped marlin bite remains strong, with many boats reporting successful catches and releases.

Weekly Tips:

Early Departure: Set off early from the Marina to get first pick at the bait it continues to be scarce plenty mullet for roosters, no mackerel, few google eyes/big eye scad (caballito), and green jacks (cocinero).
Bait Rigging: Medium-sized live baits are key to enticing those elusive catches.
Tackle Maintenance: Keep your gear in prime condition for the best chance at a high catch rate.
Prepare for a memorable week on the waters of Cabo San Lucas, where every cast is an opportunity for an unforgettable catch. 🌊🐟✨
