Bisbee Black and Blue Tournament Results 2016
The Bisbee's Black & Blue Marlin Jackpot Tournament, the richest sport-fishing contest in the world and presented this year by Orca Coolers, is the unofficial Pacifico Index. By all accounts the 2016 edition was a resounding success with an overall purse of $3,511,900 at stake for the 121 boats entered.
On the big stage in front of the Puerto Paraiso Mall Saturday night, Julio Fernandez and his Quiteña Team claimed the biggest share, a $2,183,000 payout, after landing the largest fish of the week. Fernandez outlasted a 534-pound black marlin on Thursday, and that catch swept the top team, jackpot, captain and all but one daily jackpot categories. Fernandez is from Tampico, Mexico and Quiteña (62 Viking) is led by Capt. Rich Hamilton.
Veteran B&B participant Russ Armstrong, Capt. Frank D'Anna and the crew aboard C-Bandit (75 Titan Marine) captured second-place honors with a 416-pound black brought to the scales on Friday. That fish was worth $685,000, counting the optional jackpot winnings.
Gilles Asunsolo of Mexico City and his family/buddy team scored big while fishing on Drakkar, a 65 Hatteras. His 349-pound blue marlin, which ate a pink/silver Braid plunger lure, earned a check worth $40,500 for third-place honors and various jackpots.
For the second year in a row, Team Five More Minutes (Luhrs) made the trek to the B&B awards stage. This time it was to pick up a $10,800 check for fourth-place honors. The team brought a 344-pound blue to the scales Friday, the only other qualifier for the day besides C-Bandit's.
Fastball (82 Viking) owner Bobby Patton and his pal Chip Wagner combined to record a 304-pound blue, worth $487,200 as the fifth-place tournament and the rollover jackpot winner in the daily $20,000 Chupacabra Challenge division. This optional category had eight teams competing for the winner-take-all prize. After the check was presented, Patton generously donated $10,000 each to the Los Cabos Children's Foundation and the Bisbee's Fish & Wildlife Conservation Fund. Chris Erickson of Cabo won the $10,000 Conservation Fund raffle (cash stuffed in an Orca Pod cooler), which he promptly donated to the children's foundation as well.
Last year's big winner, Tranquilo (57 Spencer), easily earned top team honors in the Release Division, led by Capt. Victor Julio. Those efforts resulted in a payout of $68,510. El Suertudo was the second-best release team ($23,715), followed by Team Bibi ($13,175). Blue and black marlin under 300 pounds, plus striped marlin and Pacific sailfish caught and successfully released, earned points based on time. For the week, a total of 234 billfish were caught by the 121-boat fleet, including 175 blue marlin, nine blacks, 56 stripers and three Pacific sailfish.
"It's been a killer week," Tournament Director Wayne Bisbee said after all the camera flashes and fireworks bursts had faded into the night. "We had some quality fish come to the scales, plenty of the usual drama and we gave away an armored-car's worth of money. I'd like to thank our nearly 1,000 anglers from around the globe that participated and to all our fantastic sponsors who make all this craziness possible. I hope to see everyone here again next October 24-28, 2017, for our 37th season."

We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Well lets get on with the fishing report for this past week.
WEATHER: The weather has been really good but the only thing is we can not shake this humidity. It has been horrible and really comparable to September weather. We did have a storm like 3 oclock in the morning Saturday, well Friday night or Saturday morning which ever you like. Lots of wind and some rain but it did blow pretty good.
WATER: Well the water has been cooling down some and we expect it to continue to cool over the next few days. It has had a effect on the fishing it seems when the water cools some we are seeing more action.

BILLFISH: The Blue Marlin fishing has stayed really good all through the tournament. 400 to 500 lbs fish have been landed all week. The Blues are being caught from the Light House to Margarita on live bait and lures. The Striped Marlin fishing has been still pretty strong with some good number throughout the fishing grounds. If you use ballyhoo, lures and live bait for the Stripers you will most likely land some fish. The hot spots for Marlin are from Grey Rock to the Pump House. The Sailfish bite is still pretty good also on the pacific side up and around Ranch Migrino with most being landed on ballyhoo closer to the beach from ¼ mile to 2 miles off shore is the hot spots.
DORADO: The Dorado fishing has been wide open from Los Arcos to Antenna on the PACIFIC side with most being on the smaller side but some 15 to 35lbs Dorado in the mix. Most of the fish were hitting ballyhoo, so keep that in mind if you're going for Dorado. There is good Dorado action still happening.
SWORDFISH: Hasn't heard of any caught this week.
WAHOO: The Wahoo fishing has slowed over the past week with really not the numbers we were seeing but still ok.
TUNA: Due to commercial Seiners pounding this area for the past 3 weeks, we are thinking the Tuna tournament coming up soon, might be a tough nut to crack. We are hoping this isn't the case but with these guys out there raping the waters in numbers we really don't know how fishing is going to be.
INSHORE: The inshore fishing has just been ok, nothing special with some small Dorado, Sailfish and Amberjack are what is happening. There has been some good Amberjack action reported using iron. Small Tuna on sardines has been good inshore if you can find the sardines. From Grey Rock to the Pump House has been the area for decent Tuna and even Sailfish action using ballyhoo. Some small Dorado every once in a while have been landed.
It might be worth grabbing a Panga and going out for a 5 hour excursion to see what happens inshore.

JC,s Baja Tuna Salad Recipe!!!
Tuna Salad with Fresh Tuna
Makes about 2 cups of salad
2 5-ounce cans water-packed tuna fish
2 to 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
1 rib celery, diced small
1 small shallot or 1/4 red onion, diced small
1 tablespoon lemon juice (from 1/2 lemon)
1 tablespoon pickle relish, optional
Salt and pepper
Add 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise, celery, shallot, lemon juice, pickle relish (if using), a sprinkle of salt, and a few cracks of fresh black pepper to the tuna fish. Stir with a fork to combine, breaking up any large chunks of tuna fish as you go. Add more mayo if you'd like smoother, creamier tuna salad. Taste and add more of any of the ingredients to taste.
Use immediately or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to a week.
Tuna Salad Variations
• Use yogurt instead of mayo for a lighter salad.
• Use extra-virgin olive oil instead of mayo for a looser salad.
• Use canned salmon, smoked trout, or leftover chicken in place of the tuna.
• Add diced apples, raisins, or dried fruit to the basic recipe.
• Add diced fennel, shredded cabbage, diced cucumbers, or any other crunchy vegetable.
• Add a dash of curry powder, dukkah, harissa, chopped fresh herbs, or any other spice mix in your cupboard.
• Tuna and mayo — it's as simple as you can get, and a perfectly acceptable lunch.
JC,s Baja Tuna Linguine!!
Marinating tuna and chopped tomatoes in wine, lemon zest and olive oil for an hour makes a fresh, simple pasta sauce.
INGREDIENTS
• 2 tablespoons pine nuts
• 1 pound tuna steak, cut into 1/2-inch dice
• 1/2 cup dry white wine
• 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
• 1/2 pound cherry tomatoes, coarsely chopped
• 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 1/4 cup coarsely chopped fennel fronds
• 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
• 1 pound linguine
• Salt and freshly ground pepper
INSTRUCTIONS
1. In a small skillet, toast the pine nuts over moderate heat until lightly browned, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a medium bowl. Add the tuna, wine and lemon zest, 1/2 cup of the cherry tomatoes and 2 tablespoons each of the olive oil and fennel fronds. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour.
2. Heat the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large, deep skillet. Add the crushed red pepper and the remaining cherry tomatoes and cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is flavorful, about 10 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, cook the linguine in boiling salted water until al dente. Reserve 1/4 cup of the pasta cooking water, then drain the linguine.
4. Add the tuna mixture and the remaining 2 tablespoons of fennel fronds to the skillet and cook over low heat, stirring just until the tuna starts to whiten, about 1 1/2 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat. Add the linguine and the reserved pasta cooking water and toss well. Season with salt and pepper and serve at once.

Bahama Mama
(makes 1)
1/2 ounce dark rum
1/2 ounce light rum
1/2 ounce 151-proof rum
1/2 ounce Kahlúa
1 ounce fresh lemon juice
3 ounces unsweetened pineapple juice
Wedge of pineapple or slice of orange and a maraschino cherry
Shake the rums, Kahlúa, lemon juice, and pineapple juice with ice then strain over crushed ice into a chilled glass. Garnish with a pineapple wedge or orange slice and a maraschino cherry.
BEWARE: Please beware of the guys in the street selling boat charters. If you wait till the day you are fishing and go to the dock where your boat is many times people will mislead you to another boat or dock trying to put you on a boat that was not meant for you. You need to have a person guide you to your boat, who is from a reputable charter company. This way there is no confusion or misleading. Please remember when renting Sport fishing boats in Cabo that you rent your boat from reputable and established business. Walk into a fishing fleet office and ask questions about what you are getting and what are the costs? You don't want to rent boats from vendors in the streets and you do not want to book through shady websites offering you the world. Check through travel forums about reputable fishing fleets to deal with. Look for testimonials about the fleet your booking, your charter with. Ask about what will the boat be supplying? Will it include beverages or lunches? How much does it cost to fillet your catch? Check to see if charter boat is insured? Ask about getting your catch smoked? Check cost of a fishing license. These are just a few things to consider when booking your charter boat. We will be talking more about this in the next weeks fishing report.
