Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

PISES WEEKLY FISH REPORT JULY 4TH TO 10TH

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

JULY 4TH TO 10TH 2001

BILLFISH: Pretty slim pickings in Cabo this week, with not a lot of anglers around and the fishing being very up and down. This fishing right now seems to be in a transition stage, as we turn from striped marlin season to blue marlin season. With water temperatures being lower than usual the fishing schedule is a little mixed up. We still had some very good catches of striped marlin especially on July 4th and 7th. On July 4th 13-year-old Rachel Bushinski, 15-year-old Sarah Bushinski and Colleen Bushinski from Garden Grove, Ca. released a striped marlin apiece aboard Tracy Ann – giving them three for the day. We neglected to mention Jim and Sheila Drummond, from Rockdale Tx, for their catch last week, of three striped marlin – all released aboard Adriana on June 28th - congratulations. Cara & Steve Boyer from Big Bend, Wi, had a striped marlin each, as did Laurie Amstadt, also from Wi, aboard Ruthless the 7th, as if this wasn’t enough they also had an 80 lb Mako shark. Nicholas Tilaczuk from Shorewood, IL & Troy Holder from Brownsburg In, also had a three-fish-day, on the 7th, all striped marlin released aboard Rebecca. There have been a few small blue marlin from 220 to 260 lbs, but there was a nice size fish on July 9th, we don’t have all the details but know that it was 430 lbs and caught aboard, Bronco. We had an overall catch success rate this week of seventy-two percent, with sixty-seven percent of our charters capturing billfish. Pisces had a total of 33 striped marlin this week, of which 29 were released; those boated were from 130 to 160 lbs. We also released two sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: As we have mentioned in previous reports, a lot of big snook have been caught in Cabo recently, sadly many are of record size but go unnoticed. On July 4th we sent Vito Alessandro from Yorba Linda, out on a panga named “Salsa”, he was thrilled when he hooked up to a large snook, very close to shore, using his own equipment and a live caballito. When they came back in the fish looked like a record to us, so we weighed it and it showed up at 49.5 lbs. The all tackle record for black snook is 57 lbs 12 oz, and the all tackle record for white snook is 39 lb 8 oz. The problem was how to differentiate between the two species. We made several phone calls, consulted different charts and books and even consulted a local marine biologist, all to no avail. We then turned to the Internet and eventually found a site that described the difference, which came down to the length of the first dorsal spine. Vito had his record - the fish was a white snook. When re-weighed, a few hours later the fish had lost weight and ended up being 46.6 lbs. This was not the only snook, there were others caught and we have been told that some were even bigger, up to 60 lbs. Very slow on both dorado and yellowfin tuna this week. Anglers deciding to skip the marlin, managed to catch skipjacks, red snapper, jack crevalle, sierra, roosterfish and amberjack in moderate amounts.

LOCATION: The week started off at Chileno and RedHill, but then switched to the Pacific, for the first time in months, off of the Old Lighthouse, 10 miles out.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Perfect, clear, sunny skies and flat seas.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 77 F

BEST LURES: Live bait.
