PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT OCT. 2 - 9TH 2001

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

Oct. 3rd to 9th 2001

BILLFISH: Well at last things are pretty much back to normal here in Cabo, boats are back fishing and doing well. Overall we had a catch success rate of ninety-four percent for all species combined, with about fifty percent of charters getting billfish. Some boats did well by getting one or more billfish in a day, as well as dorado or tuna. All of the marlin we caught this week were striped marlin, with no blues in sight, though we did have a couple of sailfish too, however, we are expecting blue marlin to start showing up in the next few days, they have to, with so much dorado and tuna around. Water is now turning blue and conditions continue to improve. Johnny Ortiz form Miami and Brad Weimer from Wisconsin, were fortunate to release one striper apiece, as well as landing two dorado, 40 and 50 lbs aboard Karina on October 4th. Robert Lenga from New Berlin, Wi and Tom Moertl from Milwaukee, had one of the better days this week, releasing two striped marlin and boating 4 tuna and 3 doardo on Oct 7th aboard “Andrea”. Actually anglers concentrated more on tuna and dorado than on billfish this week (see below). Location of fish was diverse, starting out after the storm off of the 95 spot and then moving as far as 30 miles south of Cabo. Pisces anglers caught a total of 19 striped marlin of which 14 were released. Those brought in weighed from 110 to 140 lbs. We also released two sailfish.

OTHER SPECIES: Wow, what a week for tuna! On October 3rd Kenneth Ferrell and Charles Harrod both from Arkansas, fished aboard Ruthless and were thrilled with their catch of a 175 lb yellowfin tuna, a sailfish released and a 65 lb dorado. Later in the week, Bob Lenga fishing on Adriana caught another huge tuna, 185 lbs, taking just one hour to boat on 30 lb test line. Ronald Morrison fished Ruthless on Oct. 5th and had two tuna that weighed 110 and 115 lbs. This same day Mike Dempier boated another two weighing 80 and 140 lbs aboard Rebecca. The early part of the week was better for big tuna, with many boats catching fish in the 40 to 90 lb class; the bigger fish took both live bait and lures. These big fish were generally found quite a way of shore between 20 and 30 miles. Dorado fishing has been constant, but we haven’t seen the huge numbers that we expect, then again, we are heading further out looking for big tuna. Boats averaged one to three fish in the 20 to 65 lbs class. The largest dorado we had this week was 65 lbs and the smallest 25 lbs. We did have a couple of wahoo also in the 40 to 50 lb class. Inshore boats got small dorado and skipjack.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: It has cooled off a lot after the storm, days are pleasantly warm, getting up to 87 F, nights are a little cooler, skies are clear and seas good on the Cortez side a little rough on the Pacific.

LOCATION: Off of the old lighthouse up to 18miles, 95 spot, 18 miles off of Cabeza de Ballena, south 25 to 30 miles.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP. 80 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, red colored jigs.
