PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT JUNE 28TH TO JULY 4TH, 2002

BILLFISH: Cabo is still being plagued with colder than normal weather and our fishing has not been fantastic. Despite this some fair catches of striped marlin were had this period. It was quite unusual that nearly all of the catches this week were on the Pacific – the norm for this time of year is off of Chileno and Punta Gorda. Catches were up and down but we couldn’t complain too much with an overall catch success rate of eighty percent for all species combined. The marlin catch ratio was quite a bit lower at forty-six percent (2001 was 72%). About half the boats on any given day caught marlin, with just one and occasionally two being caught in the 120 to 160 lb class. The captains told us that the water is not very blue and the temperature no higher than 73 degrees. All was not doom and gloom though, as most of the time fair amounts of dorado and tuna were caught. We also heard of a nice black marlin taken last week at East Cape – 426 lbs caught by Kenneth Gardner from Lancaster, CA. Russell Yasic from Oklahoma blanked his first day out, at Punta Gorda; the next day the captain of the “Adriana” opted for the rougher Pacific side as the Jaime Bank and scored two striped marlin and two nice sized dorado. Steve Barragan fishing aboard “Rebecca” had one of the more interesting days on July 3rd – releasing one striped marlin, one mako shark and boating two dorado and a tuna. Pisces anglers caught a total of twenty-three striped marlin this week, of which twenty were released. As we close this report, we hear that fishing has again switched to the Gordo Banks area, where the water is a little warmer. Once the weather stabilizes, we should see the great catches on all species that is common during the summer months. OTHER SPECIES: Dorado were caught by most boats this past week with the average catch being one or two in the 15 to 40 lb class, occasionally some boats got up to ten – nearly all were picked up trolling for marlin. Yellowfin tuna were not caught by as many boats, but when found, boats averaged higher catch rates – of between three to eleven in the 15 to 30 lb class – all were taken at the Jamie Banks area. Just a few wahoo in the 30 to 50 lb class. Roosters, yellowtail and jack crevalle catches were much lower this week as inshore fishing slowed. LOCATION: Punta Gorda first day of this report then San Jaime for the duration of this report. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, fog in the mornings on Pacific, seas rough.
