PISCES FISHING REPORT AUG. 24-28TH, 2002

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT

AUGUST 24TH TO 28TH, 2002

BILLFISH: We are trying to get the fish report out a little earlier, to meet deadlines of certain publications. This week’s report covers just four days, but there was so much action, it looks like a whole week’s worth or more. I cannot ever recall having so many striped marlin at this time of year. A case in point is “Valerie”, who on August 28th released six striped marlin for Gary Hall and Sean Leland from Snowhomish, Washington. This same group also fished on the 26th and had 15 marlin strikes, of which they caught three stripers and a few dorado to boot. As we have mentioned this has been the coolest summer in a long time, which is probably a lot to do with the fishing being the way it is (end of May, June type striped marlin bite). However it wasn’t all striped marlin, we are now seeing our fair share of sailfish and the odd blue marlin here and there too. The blues haven’t had much size to them being from 200 to 250 lbs. Pretty much all of the fishing in the past few days has been on the Pacific from the Old Lighthouse up as far as Golden Gate. It was difficult to get live bait this week, as the bait catchers were seldom successful, meaning most boats left with about half of the normal bait quota, having to purchase it from the receiver, but judging by our catches, this wasn’t much of a setback. So many people, had so many outstanding days this week, that it’s hard to mention them all, but here are a few; Joel Sellers from Florida, released four striped marlin and boated two dorado, aboard La Brisa on the 24th. Mac and Ashley Freeman, newlyweds from Montgomery, Alabama were here on their honeymoon (that’s a good woman who’s willing to go on a fishing vacation for her honeymoon!) they were thrilled to release three striped marlin, boat eight dorado and a wahoo on August 25th. Bob Young, an old time friend and resident of Los Cabos, fished on the 27th and released four striped marlin, two sailfish and boated two dorado, as well as losing a shark. We had just one boat “skunked” this week, giving us a ninety-nine percent overall catch success rate, the billfish catch success rate was eighty-one percent. In the last four days Pisces anglers caught 60 striped marlin, all but one released, sizes are from 90 to 160 lbs, we also released six sailfish and two blue marlin were boated by anglers both were close to 240 lbs.

OTHER SPECIES: Doardo catches are on the increase, boats are now catching from two to eight, with almost every boat, catching at least one; weights are from 15 to 50 lbs, taking both lures and live bait, over a widespread area. Jim, Dawn and C.J Pike from College Station Tx, were pleased with their dorado, which were some of the biggest we had this week (see photo), they also released a striped marlin, whilst fishing 14 miles out from the Old Lighthouse. Tuna catches were on the slow side, but the Ball family from Lake Forest, Ca. did have a beautiful 90 lb’er aboard “Rebecca” on the 27th, as well as releasing one striped marlin and boating two dorado (see photo). There were some wahoo this week, though not huge amounts of them, weights were on the small size at 20 to 40 lbs. Again several lemon sharks were let go this week.

LOCATION: Old Lighthouse, Jaime Bank, Golden Gate on the Pacific, one day Redhill on the Cortez side 8-18 miles out.

WEATHER CONDITIONS: Clear, sunny skies, some high clouds early mornings, breezy on the Pacific, but seas were good.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP:82-83 F

BEST LURES: Live bait, green/yellow, orange/brown.
