Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

Oct. 11th to Oct. 17th

PISCES WEEKLY FISH REPORT OCT. 11TH TO 17TH, 2002

BILLFISH: As we close this report the Bisbee tournament has just ended. They had a total of 148 entries this year, but only six fish over the qualifying 300 lbs were caught during the three day event. The winning fish was 439 lbs caught aboard Picante Pride. A fair week here in Cabo for billfish, though not great. Pisces anglers had an overall catch success rate of ninety-five percent for all species combined but only forty-two percent of boats got a marlin or sailfish. Bret Snow and Richard Donahue from Taunton, Mass. had a fabulous day on Rebecca on Oct. 12th, releasing a nice blue marlin and boating 15 dorado in the 15 to 30 lb class. A couple of days after this, La Brisa was lucky for John Negki from New Jersey, scoring him one blue marlin and one striped marlin release as well as four nice dorado. The best day of the week was Wednesday. October 16th – this day Ronald Thierren and Ralph Henault form New Boston, caught two striped marlin and a blue marlin aboard La Brisa at the Golden Gate. Dorothy French and friends fished the same area aboard Rebecca and managed to release three stripers. Tracy Ann had a respectable day too with a striped marlin released, six dorado and two tuna boated. Weather was hot at the start of the week, but has now cooled down considerably. Fishing has been all pretty much on the Pacific. We are looking at a slow week coming up with the APEC in town (Asian Pacific Economic Coordination), very few anglers have booked and we also have restricted fishing areas, however, the fishing has been nowhere near these restricted areas, so this shouldn’t be a problem. Pisces anglers caught a total of five blue marlin this week, most were released but those brought in were from 200 to 300 lbs, we also had twenty-four striped marlin, of which twenty-two were released and two sailfish, both released. OTHER SPECIES: Dorado was definitely the top sport fish this week – our anglers tally for the week was over 200, in the 15 to 40 lb range. They took practically anything put in the water and were found from the Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate. What surprised us most this week was the amount of wahoo. We caught these every day and many boats had double wahoo catches – average weight was 30 lbs, but some went as large as 80 lbs. Yellowfin tuna catches were spotty, but there were a few boats that went out a long way and had respectable catches – La Brisa caught five for Peter Miller, on Oct. 15th, 20 miles out from the Lighthouse – sizes ranged from 30 lbs all the way up to 160 lbs. A couple of days before this Andrea went out 34 miles in the same direction and boated a nice 120 lb yellowfin (this boat is available for the WON tuna tournament). Inshore boats caught the odd small rooster and a few small dorado. WEATHER CONDITIONS: Seas were on the rough side most of the week, as the wind blew all night. Skies clear, sunny and beautiful. LOCATION: Pacific side Old Lighthouse to Golden Gate. AVERAGE WATER TEMP: 85-87 F BEST LURES: green/yellow Based on the catches of Pisces Fleet by Tracy Ehrenberg
