Cabo San Lucas - Saltwater Fishing Report

APRIL 18TH TO 24TH

BILLFISH: Fishing is right on track for this time of year in fact, it looks like it is better than average for April. Basically we are seeing fairly good catches on striped marlin with close to sixty percent of our charters releasing these. What is a little unusual are the sailfish being caught, as it’s on the early side for this species. A lot of boats saw marlin and threw bait to them, but getting them to bite was not easy; it was a question of finding a hungry fish. Often bait was cast, the marlin would take a look, lose interest and then disappear. To make up for this we did have great action on small game such, dorado and tuna. We have several groups worthy of mention this week with our top day being April 24th: James Juliani’s group aboard “Valerie” fought two sailfish, one striped marlin and also boated a couple of nice, 20-30 lb dorado this day. “Ruthless” achieved two stripers, three dorado and four yellowfin tuna for Carmen Laird and Kevin Pierce from Oregan and “Karina” had a mixed bag of one marlin released, one dorado, one tuna and one wahoo for Perry O’Brien from California. A couple of days before this “Ruthless” had an outstanding day for Maurice Hatcher and friends from Duluth Ga, with two sailfish, one striped marlin and six dorado to boot. On April 21st Craig and Coree Wainscott from Seattle, were the lucky anglers with three striped marlin released and two dorado boated aboard “Tracy Ann”. Of course we have to mention Zachary Lavely, one of our youngest anglers this week at twelve years old, who nevertheless was able to release a nice striped marlin, around 150 lbs and catch a 50 lb wahoo, with day Ross, aboard “La Brisa”, just two miles out from Chileno. Pisces anglers caught a total of 41 striped marlin this week, of which 38 were released, we also released 7 sailfish. Our overall catch success rate for all species combined was slightly above ninety-three percent. The catch success rate for billfish was fifty nine-percent.

OTHER SPECIES: More people caught dorado than any other sportsfish this week in Cabo, sixty-five percent of charters managed to land these tasty fish, with the average catch per boat between one & three, other boats occasionally had up to a half dozen; average weight was 20 to 30 lbs. Yellow fin tuna catches were fair with about a third of charters catching fish in the 30-40 lb class – most boats had 2-4 fish and the luckier ones had 8 or 9, over a widespread area.

Wahoo catches went up with about ten percent of charters picking up fish in the 35 to 50 lb range. Inshore still fair amounts of yellowtail are available, lots of triggerfish, small pompano and small roosterfish.

LOCATION: Cortez side, Santa Maria to Punta Gorda, two to 12 miles offshore.

AVERAGE WATER TEMP : 74 F

BEST LURES: Live bait for marlin, feathers and cedar plugs for tuna, small marlin lures for dorado yellow/green.
