Carolina Blue Skies make for a productive day!

Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Late report from Saturday. Today I had the pleasure of fishing with the Cunningham party. This was a fun loving group of fishing enthusiasts. We launched out of Bernard Bayou at the foot of the Loraine Road Bridge and started our exploration for Reds promptly after the first bend. We hadn't made a 50 foot pass before Scott landed the first Red. It was an exciting time and a first for unusual fish fighting techniques for me. All I will say in this report was the Red was landed and the group has one unusual experience to talk about! If you want the details you will have to ask Scott!

After another pass at a small Island Scott was on again! After a few minutes of fight, the second red for the day was landed and checked into the "Ice Chest Hotel". We never found the Trout bite in Bernard Bayou, but if you are looking for Reds they are there. There was plenty of bait and the many drains, canals, and sloughs were full of Reds making their usual "V" wakes. We tried Pops Ferry but could not find any bait fish activity so it was on to Big Island. Plenty of bait and signs of feeding fish, but we could not get any takers to the hook.

At the I 110 bridges, the Black Drum are thick as ever. We were there for the end of the rising tide and the bite was on! Chris landed the first Drum in the 5-6 lb range, Scott landed the second in the 3-4 lb range, but Barbara took the award for the day for the largest fish landing a Black Drum in the 18-20 lb category. One nice 36 inch fish. The tide slacked off and started a very slow fall, too slow to keep the fish biting, but not enough to shut down the catfish. We landed more than our share of Catfish. Actually Don was won the catfish catching honor and everyone started calling him "Catfish".

Chris, a member of the Marine Corp is stationed here with the See Bee's and I found that the group was from the Ashville, Arden area of Western North Carolina. I too lived there for a time and we were able to compare notes of that area of the country and remarking on how small our little world can be sometimes!

Now is the time to chase some Reds they are on the prowl and the past storms did not shut down the bait. The last week of October still has a few openings as well as November. This pattern will continue through December, but the big trout will be back inshore in a few weeks making for some excellent early AM topwater bites.
