Opening the Bonnet Carre Spillway in LA!

Capt. Charles Damiens
April 16, 2008
Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Lots of heavenly displaced water in the past few weeks and months has made things interesting around here. The local rivers are bursting their banks and our in shore bays have extremely low salinities. The winds have also played havoc with boaters preventing most from fishing comfortably at the outside Islands and Reefs.

The Mississippi River is creeping up and the Corp of Engineers will open the Bonnet Carre Spillway, dumping volumes of water into Lake Ponchatrain. This will affect the entire Northwestern Louisiana Marsh (aka:Biloxi Marsh), Lake Catherine, Lake Bourne, Herron Bay, and the Southwestern shores of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

This water diversion will not affect the majority of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, in fact it will push many spawning fish toward our islands. And as soon as this fresh water flushes out of our river systems, from our recent rain fall, it will be "Game On" for this Mississippi Gulf Coast.

From Cat Island all the way to Petit Bois, our barrier islands will be protected form this influx of water from the Mississippi River. Bay St Louis with the Jordan River, Wolf River water shed will be as hot as ever. Back Bay Biloxi with the Biloxi River, Tchoutacabouffa River, watersheds will be on fire. This particular area is loaded with man made reefs as well as numerous Island shorelines, Bridges and other structure to fish. The Pascagoula River Marsh Estuary System will turn out some excellent catches of Reds and Trophy Trout.

The time is at hand to book a trip. Most might find these reports self-serving, but that is not my intent. The intent is to make sure you don't overlook Mississippi Waters when you chose you charter trip. The choices for dinning and non-fishing entertainment are excellent on our coast, and there are many charter services to pick from to meet your specifications for a "Fishing Trip". There are Capt Barry Brown, Capt Robert Brodie, Capt Scott Simpson, and myself Capt Charles Damiens just to name a few. All of these Captains run their own Charter Services, and report on this web site. Though we all provide a "Charter Service", each is unique.

Don't wait until it is too late! Do your homework find the Charter Service that will meet your Preferred Destination, Preferred Species, and Your Budget!
Let's GO Fishing!
