Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report
Chartering with GOOD People!
It is still hot on our Mississippi Gulf Coast. The high pressure is once again building and the heat index rising well into the triple digits.
I had the pleasure of fishing with Danny and Inez from Louisiana today. We got off to an early start from my home port at Fishemans Trail in Gulfport. It was unusually cool for an August morning but this time of year 70 anything feels cool while on an early AM boat ride.
The weatherman predicted 5 mile per hour wind out of the southeast. The winds were about 5 miles per hour, but definitely out of the northeast all day. Now maybe my compass is broken but if the sun still rises in the east, the winds were definitely out of the northeast. Well 50% on the forecast isn’t that bad for the weather.
We arrived at the Katrina reef just before sunrise. After anchoring we were engaged in our endeavor of putting fish in the boat. And the fish were there. The problem is it was virtually nothing but croakers, and catfish.
After several moves around the reef and fishing several other near shore reefs our species of the day did not change. The total catch for the day 30 croakers, 1 speckle trout, 1 white trout, 1 ground mullet, and innumerable catfish.
The heat drove us in around 1 PM. Danny and Inez are good people. My charter with them was like fishing with old friends. Even though our catch wasn’t great, a great time was had by all.
September is on the horizon and the speckle trout and the reds will be moving back to their old haunts in Back Bay Biloxi. The fishing will become easy and the temperatures very pleasant. Hope to see Danny and Inez again this fall as planned.
