Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Hooked goes on Photo Safari!
Another summer day on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. But not your routine charter. This one had many objectives to accomplish. All revolving around catching.
I know you might think, aren’t they all about catching, and the answer is “yes of course”. But not today’s quarry. Today we were after the most elusive of prey. It can be seen at sunrise to sunset in any location on any stretch of water. It lurks in every bend, every straight away, and every island shore. Today’s catch was the “Perfect Shot”.
I had the opportunity to guide Mr. Bill Spiers from Picayune, MS today. Bills objective was to visit the area waters, see the flora and fauna, and capture them in digital still shots. Oh yea, and we got to do some fishing to!
Another morning just like yesterday, with the tease of the morning air trying to make you think it is cool outside. The damp morning air and a pre-dawn boat ride can give the body the illusion it is a fall morning. That illusion is abruptly interrupted around 10 AM when the heat and humidity rise charging into the triple digit heat index zone.
The morning skies showed we had bad weather on the way. First anchorage the Katrina reef. The reef looked like a used boat parking lot. We found only a few catfish biting so we were off to the primary objective of Exploring and Photography.

The skies were turning black around Cat and Ship Island with lightning framing the shot. So the next anchorage was the north side of Deer Island. While beaching the boat and using the jack plate for rear anchorage, we were greeted by an Osprey intently checking us out. After a brief overview of the boat, he took flight with his morning meal tightly in his talons. Bill jumped ship with his camera gear in hand and landed quite a few great shots during his quest.
Skirting the weather we headed into Back Bay Biloxi in the pursuit of fish. Anchoring over an old established reef we found a few large white trout sampling our offerings as well as a few croakers and unfortunately catfish. Chatting like we were old friends and remembering the primary objective, we were off looking once again for the elusive perfect shot.
Today’s catch might not impress many but Bill had a Camera Creel full of record book shots. A half dozen fish and a smile from ear to ear. Looking forward to our next trip in September on the Pascagoula River. New location same quarry.
