Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

The season is changing slowly.
The Water Oaks in my back yard have started to change their leaves from dark green to crimson red. It funny how these trees are the first indicators of seasonal change. The first to bud out and produce leaves, as well as the first to change colors and lose their leaves. All six of the trees have less than half of their leaves intact. The rest are waiting on the ground to be raked or better yet mulched by the mower.
This means that we are only a few weeks away from some excellent Mississippi Gulf Coast Fishing. High temperatures will settle down into the upper 80’s, mostly due to those late afternoon tropical showers, and the mornings will be down right near perfect. The Reds will be moving into their old haunts waiting to be pursued as if we were plugging the banks for Bass, and the Flounder will be a frequent reward as well on our jigs and spoons. The Trout will begin to move into the inshore reefs, moving from one reef to another in search of bait, while the Gulls will tell on them when they feed on a large pod of baitfish in the bays. The Black Drum and Sheepshead will be migrating to the submerged man-made rubble reefs and the railroad bridges. Bottom line things are about to get interesting.
Currently the White Trout are still plentiful around the Katrina Reef as well as the deeper water near the established inshore reefs. It is common to catch an ice chest full of them. Keeper Speckle Trout are mixed in with the White Trout as well as Flounder, Ground Mullet, Croaker, Gray Snapper, and most unfortunately Catfish (Hard Head, and Sail). Black Drum are there for the taking at my favorite Back Bay haunt as well as the occasional Redfish on the prowl prepping up for the smorgasbord of crustaceans that keep them rooting up the shallows like the pigs they are. Of course Ladyfish are still present giving us an exciting aerial acrobatic display anytime they find our hook.
Like I said thing are about to get even more exciting than they already are so don’t let late September and October pass you by. Now is the time to book a trip. Perfect weather is on the way and openings are limited. I love this time of year and will be on the water Charter or not. Give me a call, book a trip and let's go Catching.
