Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Fish Feeding On The Flats!
The past couple of days the high have been in the upper 60’s with today’s high 74. A stark contrast from last week but our fishing techniques haven’t varied much.
The early mornings have been producing small numbers of large Speckle Trout by trolling their deep water hangouts. As the morning warms the grassy banks with deep water have been producing both Reds and Speckle Trout.
When weather patterns make these drastic changes, as they have recently, it is time for the afternoon trips. The heat of the day begins to warm the flats and the fish begin to move on to them to feed. Find those productive deep water spots that are adjacent to the flats. Especially the flats that have a vast network of canals and slews that drain into them.
This time of year our tides are at their lowest in the mornings and will be rising all day. This will allow you to navigate into the shallower waters following the feeding fish on their hunting expeditions. You will need to cover a vast amount of water in as short of time as possible on your trolling motor. You are in a searching pattern. Look for bait activity (nerves water) and your quarry will be in close proximity. Points, cuts, bends, and canal mouths should be thoroughly fished. Many times it is the angle of presentation that matters not the specific bait you are throwing.
Two to three days after a significant cold front is the best time to use these techniques. If the cold fronts are few and far between wait until the highs are predicted to be in the 68-73 range before planning a trip. This is a tough time of year to plan a trip with these large swings in temperature. But the absolute BEST day is the day with the highs in the 70’s and a Cold front moving in that night. The fish know it and they can feel it in their lateral lines and will gorge themselves on bait to prepare for the colder deep water life they will have for the next few days.
