Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Reds are in the canals!
Targeting reds has been a challenge up until now. It is very predictable now with our current weather patterns.
Pounding the banks is productive, but requires a lot of moving, covering a lot of water. Limiting out is no problem and a few goods Speckle Trout will also be your reward. The only negative is a lot of casting is required.
For the sheer sport of targeting Reds the best bet is outside canals that are navigable (at least by trolling motor) and drain into open water. This can cause a problem for some, on these windy winter days, when a light chop turns into a rough blow. But these canal systems have been holding an incredible amount of schooling reds.
Troll or pole up one of these waterways and the fish will reveal their hangouts. When you hook up have your partner through a lure on the same track your fish was on because there is usually another in close proximity. It is not unusual to find dozens of fish schooling up together in a large pod. The bulls will be mixed in with the slot fish and if you are into catch and release it isn’t hard to pull a dozen fish out of one of these skinny waterways.
Good Luck out there! Let’s go fishing! Bring along a kid and pass along the heritage!
