Gulfport - Saltwater Fishing Report

Rainy and Cold!
The recent heavy rains have been very welcome, for our area, but have had an affect on fishing. The Speckle Trout can be found, but they are still deep in the deepest pockets where turbidity does not affect the water clarity, and the saltier water can still infuse with the ebb and flow of the tide.
For the Reds, fish either the outside canals (canals with saltier water access), or canals adjacent to deep water (18 plus feet). This past super cold weather pushed them deep, but they are beginning to get a little use to the colder water this time of year. With the beginning cold fronts of the year, they ran deep when the water temp hit 50 anything. Now they will venture into the canals on sunny days with water temps warming into the mid to upper 50's. Once we have those midday water temps that start crossing into the 60's, start looking for deep canal systems that have flats off of them, or dead end into a lagoon.
Fishing Reds and Speckle Trout is a lot like hunting. Learn your quarry and track their movements. When you read other reports out there don't worry about the exact location, look at the other details provided. Water temp, depth, canals vs. lagoons etc. The most valuable information is usually overlooked by those who are looking for the where. And if you can gather the information of what circumstances of events were going on you can usually find your own location that recreate those same situations that will put you on fish.
Good Luck out there. Give us a call and let’s go fishing!
