Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Made a quick jaunt to the Bellefontaine Reef located in the Mississippi Sound today, and fished from 12:30 to 2:30. As usual, the bite was excellent once the fish were pinpointed, usually on a dropoff just off the main reef.
A tally of 50 fish, a combination of southern kingfish a.k.a. "ground mullet" and sand sea trout a.k.a. "white trout" found their way to the live well. Bait was fresh dead shrimp, and then our croaker by catch became cut bait, an offering that was quickly inhaled.
There were plenty of fish on the first reef, and we did not need to run to the big rubble reef to the east, but I am sure there were plent of fish there too. Favorite hook for bottom fishing these reefs is a 1/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Hook, ideal for the small mouth ground mullet, and yet strong enough to land a 50-pound black drum or a 30-pound redfish on light tackle.
Water temperature in the Mississippi Sounf today was 67 degrees, and getting close to that magic 70 degree mark. The small sharks and big gafftopsail catfish havent showed yet, but soon they will be in the mix, and provide great light tackle fun.
Amazingly, March produced a record number of booked trips, and the fishing in April is even better, so let's go catch some fish. Looking forward to guiding you in the new Blazer Bay "Team Brodie Charters", a fast sleek bay boat with state of the art equipment.
For the more adventurous, I'll be guiding a few anglers on cobia chumming trips just outside our barrier islands, and in a few weeks will be taking charters to Louisiana's fish filled waters around Isle au Pitre, Jack Williams Bay, Door Point, Chino Bay, and Brush Island. All of these are great adventures when weather permits!
Everyone in the charter boat industry is up and running, and all of us, big and small boats, are looking forward to giving you a pleasant fun filled day on the water.
Remember...life is short...let's fish!
Regards,
Capt. Robert L. Brodie of TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS
