Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today I had the pleasure of guiding noted outdoor writer/photographer Jill J. Easton of Arkansas to a fun filled day of fish catching off the shores of south Mississippi.

Jill was on a photo shoot quest, and needed pictures of a mixed bag of fish for articles and travel guides back home. We decided to head out to the barrier islands and seek out some of those hard fighting and delicious Florida pompano.

Knowing these silvery fish make wonderful photo opts, we fished the clear shallows hard with specially designed bottom rigs and fresh shrimp. Unlike days ago when the fish seemed to be everywhere, well, they were far and few between.

Maybe the full moon had them feeding at night, but we stuck it out and fished for them hard. However, our persistence and determination paid off, and 4 of the exotics were boated, and we had one cut us off on the prop.

Hey, these fish make wild runs and jumps at boatside, and such an occurence happens now and then.

In our efforts to land those silvery beauties, we went through hordes of hungry high-leaping ladyfish, toothy bluefish, speedy blue runners, and a number of line stripping bonnethead sharks.
On our way home a pit stop at the Katrina Reef delivered a hot bite of southern kingfish a.k.a. "ground mullet" and big "yellow mouth" sand sea trout a.k.a. "white trout".
The trout were fine specimens running 14 to 16-inches in length, and in the short time we had to fish, 35 or so were quickly boxed, as well as a beautiful Spanish mackerel that fell for a live "finger" mullet.
That afternoon bite was just turning on, and looked to be a non stop fish catching situtation if we had more time. Hey, a late afternoon charter trip is a great way to beat the heat, as well as catch plenty of fish.
However, with a nice catch of fish, plenty of photo opts for Jill, and stories to write about, well, it was another magnificent day of fishing in our big playground called south Mississippi.
The bottom line is that there are plenty of fish to catch right now, and we don't have to travel far to catch them. So gather up the kids, and come spend an enjoyeble day of fishing aboard TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS. You won't be dissapointed!
Remenber...life is short...let's fish!

Capt. Robert L. Brodie of TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS
