Biloxi, MS - Pre Hurricane Gustav Fishing Was Wonderful!

Capt. Robert L. Brodie

Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

The last couple of days before the arivial of Hurricane Gustav the fishing was great. Speckled trout, sand sea trout a.k.a. "white trout", southern kingfish a.k.a. "ground mullet", and those amazing Florida pompano dominated the bite.

My last trip on Saturday included noted outdoor writer/photographer David Hawkins of Mississippi Outdoors, along with his wife, and daughter.

We started out at the Katrina Reef where the bite on white trout and ground mullet was decent, and they easily boated 30 or more of the tasty bottom dwellers.

However, David really wanted to catch a few Florida pompano, and we were soon on our way across the Mississippi Sound to Ship Island.

Bouncing around in a 2-foot sea in the shallows, the bite came quick and David was quick to catch his first pompano. Of course the action was on fire with big ladyfish, bluefish, and juvenile cobia keeping the bite steady, a fish every cast.

David's daughter Debrinna was quick to get in on the action too, and soon Mrs. Hawkins had here first Florida pompano in the boat. The trio of anglers enjoyed a beautiful morning catching the silver hued beauties, and in the end boated 6 hard fighting and delicious pompano.

Took them to the island to stretch their legs, and saw a number of pompano jumping right on the beach. Of course big sharks, giant stingrays, thousands of spawning crabs, massive schools of mullet added to the shallow water excitement.

In all, a catch of 30 plus white trout and ground mullet, 6 Florida pompano, and all the ladyfish, bluefish, and small cobia they could reel in made for a wonderful day on the water.

As I write this the hurricane is passing over, and I hope all fare well from this storm. However, the show must go on, and I'll be back up and fishing as soon as the weather clears.

Looking forward to trying our luck in post hurricane fishing, and it's generally been great in the past. Until the next fishing report keep it safe out there, and live to fish another day. God bless!

Mississippi Sound Fishing Forecast:

September will continue a steady bite of all sorts of fish. The barrier islands should be on fire after the storm passes. Look for more pompano, speckled trout, white trout, redfish, ground mullet, ladyfish, bluefish, flounders, and Spanish mackerel to provide a steady bite.

Heavy rains may chase the fish out of the rivers for a while, but will return with a vengence. Barrier islands should be on fire as fish will be chased farther offshore due to an influx of fresh water.

Bottom line, when the weather clears expect more excellent late season fishing to continue.

Target Species:

Pompano, speckled trout, white trout, ground mullet, redfish
