Florida Pompano & Big Spanish Arrived, & Trout By The 100's

Capt. Robert L. Brodie
October 25, 2010
Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

TEAM BRODIE CHARTERS continues to haul in the fish, and last week was an every day affair with big catches of white trout and ground mullet on the inshore oyster reefs and/or big Spanish mackerel and hefty Florida pompano at the barrier islands.

Yeah, I know it has been a while since my last report, but the weather last week was simply magnificent, and the bite, well, it was hotter than ever.

It continues to be easy to put over 100 white trout and ground mullet in the box, and then a 20 minute run to the barrier islands delivered a great bite on the delicious and hard fighting Florida pompano and line stripping Spanish mackerel.

It was great to see these two species make their late season run as usual, and the mackerel, well, they have been really fine fish in the 2 to 6-pound class. Live menhaden were tossed out on free lines, and the big Spanish could be seen chasing down the lively baits on the surface. Just a great sight to behold!

With this change in the season look for another big run on black drum, sheepshead, as well as redfish added into to the mix of bridge and structure fishing.

By the way, I've converted most of my spinning reels to a 100-yard top-shot of braided line, and that will increase the odds of landing the big drum, sheepshead, and reds that prowl in the barnacle-encrusted structure hot spots that they inhabit in the fall and winter.

Went to it last season for a while, and the landing ratio on the big structure dwellers went up dramatically. Bottom line, this stuff really works, and is tough as nails. No stretch, and you can detect the slightest nibble.

Speckled trout should be moving up into the coastal rivers and bayous too, and they can be caught by slow trolling, free lining live shrimp, or casting jigs. This is alway fun, and provides a change of scenery from the bay and island fishing.

Regards and many thanks to all,
