Huge Black Drum Makes Angler's Day!

Capt. Robert L. Brodie
March 24, 2008
Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

Today was another one of those cold and windy days, a stiff north wind all day long made it impossible to get to those oyster reefs loaded with white trout and groun mullet.

However, "Plan B" called for fishing structure throughout the Back Bay of Biloxi, and seek out structure dwellers like black drum and sheepshead.

On the bridge structure, my clients Justin Hatcher and his girlfriend Melenda managed to boat a couple of nice sheepshead and a black drum. Melenda hooked a monster fish that cut her off on the barnacle-encrusted pilings, but that's all part of tight quarters structure fishing.

But the real fish story occured when Justin hooked into a monster fish that we ended up fighting out of a moving boat. And what a fight! For 1 hour and 35 minutes, Justin went toe to toe with the big fish, and pushed the small spinning rig and 10-pound-test to its limit.

The big fish took us on a long boat ride through the mouth of the bay, and eventually into the channel where dodging shrimp and oyster boats came into play.

But in the end Justin was victorious, and the fish of the day was defeated. This fish, a fine specimen in excess of 50-pounds left Justin worn and cramped, up a very happy angler never the less.

Just another day fishing the inshore waters of south Mississippi. Good fishing!

Mississippi Sound Fishing Forecast:

As soon as these winds lay down I'll be back to the reefs loading up on white trout and ground mullet. Last Saturday my clients boated 185 of the fat roe-laden fish in a span of less than 2-hours, and the run will continue to get better in the near future. Don't pass up on this fast action fishing, and it makes for top-notch family fun too.

Target Species:

ground mullet, white trout, flounder, sheepshead, black drum
