Part Two Fishing Marathon Conclusion!

Capt. Charles Damiens
July 19, 2008
Mississippi Sound - Saltwater Fishing Report

This is part two of Leonard's marathon fishing excursion. The objectives were accomplished, diversity and covering multiple areas of our coast. We spent the past four days fishing the Mississippi Gulf Coast from Pascagoula to Back Bay Biloxi. Every man made reef was fished along the way, including casting the shore lines for Reds.

Day 3: 7-18-08 Back Bay Biloxi

We launched at the D'Iberville marina and off we went. With a live well full of Shrimp we were looking for the early morning bite on some of the interior reefs. First stop the reefs north of Spoil Island. The popping cork bite refused to produce, but attempting to drown a live Shrimp on the bottom was resulting in some small specks below the legal size limit.

Next destination Big Island, looking for Reds, and trolling within casting distance was the plan. Leonard and I had several strikes but were unable to connect. Finally at the mouth on one of my favorite bayous, my gold spinner got nailed! A nice little fight ensued and a plump 22" Red was boated. After a return pass resulted in no activity we were back on the Motor.

We tried many shores and reefs, Goat Island, Damphman Point, and Keesler AFB Reef to name a few, but our results were the same. We boated many Croakers, Ground Mullet, White Trout, and unfortunately Cat Fish but we sent them all back to their watery homes. By now the day was heating up, so we sought the shade of the I-110 Bridge looking for the large Black Drum that frequent the area. With no breeze and cloudless skies even the old faithful Drum were unwilling to participate.

Day 2: 7-19-08 Katrina Reef / Lunch Cruise

Saturday morning, and everyone who has a boat was on the water. Of course we knew this up front, so we decided on returning to the Katrina Reef for a morning of fishing. Once again loaded with live Shrimp we were on our way and at the reef in little or no time. Man I love this Bay Water 22"! Our hot spot from Thursday was smothered up so we anchored in a similar location. I like the areas with small breaks. This allows water to flow from one side to the other. These areas seem to hold the best concentration of bait and fish.

Leonard was drowning a live shrimp on the bottom while I was popping the surface. Leonard made the best decision! Boom he was nailed and drag was screaming! A nice 22" fish was at the boat, but that was the closest it made it to being landed. Several shrimp later and a nice Black Drum checked in to the "Ice Chest Hotel". A couple of decent White Trout also checked in, but the Ground Mullet, and Croaker were sent back home. Leonard did manage one more nice 16" Speck just before the bite shut down.

We tried a few more locations, but decided to call it a day. One more objective to accomplish! A nice long cruise to Gulfport Lake and beat the heat over lunch at "The Dock". There are a few dock side restaurants in our area, and these can be worked into your trip as well, just ask for details when you call!
