Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Redfish Schooling Around
We are catching redfish on all of the hot water patterns now. You can easily get a limit on live bait by anchoring on any of several points where tide water runs hard. The baitfish naturally follow the tide around the points where the redfish (specks and flounder too) ambush them. A live bait on a hook is unable to get away and is an easy meal for the reds on those spots.
We are also catching limits of reds by trolling the marsh banks and casting either artificial cocahoes or top water lures. The artificial cocahoe is the most productive lure because the reds ALWAYS get the hook when they strike. Another benefit to using the cocahoe is that you also will catch flounder on the same pattern.
Besides the great fishing, the Pascagoula marsh is a great place to observe a variety of wildlife. No matter where you are in our marsh you can look around and find an Osprey on the hunt for fish. You don't have to watch one long before you see it go into a dive and crash into the water, usually coming out with a mullet. We also have hundreds of Brown Pelican that dive (less gracefully than the Osprey) into schools of Menhaden or mullet.
Other wildlife you will see on most outings are Bottle-Nosed Dolphin, Alligators, Great Blue Herons, Egrets, and many other birds.
