Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mild Temps and Hot Fishing
We have made three trips in the last week, our first outings since hurricane Katrina. October is typically one of the best months for redfish and specks here, but this year the fishing is outstanding.
We are using large live menhaden for bait and fishing on the bottom around structure. When a redfish or speckled trout picks up the bait you feel the strike and then he makes a run. We are fishing with baitcast reels and leaving the spool free so the fish can have a little more time to swallow the big bait while he is running with it. After about a 5 count we engage the reel and set the hook.
Some of the specks we are catching now are big enough to pull like redfish, so we're not sure what we've got until we see it. Also, the hurricane surge left some unusual species to this area that add a little more excitement. We have been spooled twice by Jack Crevalle, and are catching 10 pound gaff-top catfish.
So far we are seeing three pound specks, but soon the five to six pounders will be here. The reds are running in the 4 to 10 pound range.
The temperatures are cool and the fishing is hot this time of year. If you've been thinking about going fishing give me a call.
