Trout Slow Down with Colder Temps

After a tremendous post-hurricane bonanza on both reds and specks, things have slowed down over the past 10 days or so. The speckled trout are very difficult to locate, and the numbers are not very impressive. Part of the reason is due to colder water temperatures.

Many of the trout have moved into 12 to 15 feet depths where we can pick up a few here and there on rattletraps and cocahoe jigs. The presentation that works is much slower than that of a few weeks ago. The specks in the deep holes seem to be suspended somewhere within 6 feet of the bottom.

We are also catching a few nicer specks on some oyster flats in about 3 feet of water. Those trout will occasionally hit top water, but your best shot at them are slow sinkers or suspended lures such as a Catch 2000.

The redfish are still hanging around a few steep riverbanks that have produced a lot of fish this year. Most of the reds are in the 8 pound range.

We have had several days of warm weather that should have the surface temperature up a little and may excite the trout on some of our shallow water spots. We will be checking that out on our next few trips.
