Mississippi Sound & the Pascagoula River Marsh

Capt. Barry Brown
January 30, 2006
Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring Is Near

Fishing has been a little slow lately. The specks are scattered mainly along the river channel, and can be caught if you have enough patience to fish slow with jigs. It's been tough to make a limit on most days over the past two weeks.

The good news on specks is that we are catching a few nicer ones on the flats. We are looking forward to spring when we will start throwing my favorite top water lures. The warm weather we have had lately is heating the water up enough to try the top water lures on the flats, but our best results are still with jigs and sinker plugs.

The reds are scattered around as well. When you find them there are a lot of them schooled up, but they usually move within a day or so and you have to look for them again.

We are starting to catch a few flounder on each trip, so we are looking forward to an excellent spring flounder season. They are running in the 16" range which is larger than normal for this time of year.

I expect the fishing to improve gradually over the next few weeks and we should be catching good numbers of specks, reds, and flounder by March.
