Mississippi Sound & the Pascagoula River Marsh

Capt. Barry Brown
March 7, 2006
Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Reds Are In The Shallows

My last trip on March 5th was typical of the spring. We started the day fishing specks and caught several in the 14" to 15" range, and about twice that many 13 inchers that were not keepers according to Mississippi's legal length. We caught the specks on chartreuse cocahoes with a 1/4 oz. jighead.

After fishing the specks for a couple hours we wanted a little more action and went for the reds along a grass bank in one of my favorite lakes. We used live cocahoe minnows fishing on the bottom in about 2 feet of water. Within a few minutes we landed our first red; a keeper, but only about 19 inches long. A few minutes later we landed one about 7 pounds. Within an hour we boated a total of 8 reds; all but one over 7 pounds.

After the reds played out we went back to the speckled trout holes. The action had picked up considerably by then, however the keeper to non-keeper ratio was about the same as earlier. In all we caught about 40 specks, and kept 15.

I expect the coming weeks to be action packed as the water temperature continues to rise and the baitfish become more plentiful.
