Mississippi Sound & the Pascagoula River Marsh

Pascagoula River - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big Fish Make For A Big Time!

Several days ago I had the pleasure of guiding Charles Damiens, his aunt Carolyn Damiens and Betty Bryant. We started before daylight using my favorite live pogies for bait. Our first stop found some nice size specks biting pretty well, mostly on Carolyn's line. Carolyn seemed to know how to hold her mouth all day, in fact.

After boating several good trout at the first hole we moved on to a few of my other favorite fall spots. We pecked away at some more trout and a red.

A few hours into the trip we ended up at a hole that occasionally produces the biggest fish in the river. Today would be one of those days. Carolyn immediately hooked a nice red in the 6 pound range. Then Charles and Betty got into the action.

Betty started slowly in the early hours, but finished solidly with two reds over 9lbs each and a few other smaller ones.

Around 12:30 p.m. Carolyn hooked into a fish that couldn't be turned. I pulled up anchor and started the chase. I knew she either had a big red or a Jack. We have caught a few reds over 30 lbs in that spot this year, but we've also seen a lot of Jacks in the area so I couldn't be sure. After about 20 minutes we got a glimpse of the fish and I was pretty sure then it was in fact a Jack. Carolyn kept fighting him and about five minutes later we got him in the net: a 25lb Jack Crevalle.

The highlight of the trip came at the end when Carolyn landed a 7lb 4oz speckled trout (pictured in the photo gallery at marshfishing.com). That was one pretty fish!

We ended up with 10 reds, a dozen nice trout, and a lot of stories.
