Kimberling City Area: Cold rain over the weekend did little to lower water temperatures in the mid lake, temps have been consistently in the upper 50's on the main lake and mid 50's toward the backs of creeks. Two distinct bites have emerged over the past week with a deep bite showing up for numbers of fish and a shallow crankbait bite for better quality largemouth. Look for fish to be suspending around 35 – 45 feet deep over as much as 90' deep for the deep bite. Chompers Webb Tail Spoons have been the bait of choice, work them above the fish to draw strikes. Wiggle warts on chunk rock banks and points will produce better fish less than ten feet deep.
James River: The coldest water on the lake is up the James River. Low to mid 50's are common throughout the mid and upper James. Chompers McCutchen spinnerbaits slow rolled on rocky points and banks are producing quality fish as will a wiggle wart in these same locations. Key on wind blown ledge rock banks and work both baits along the bottom from the bank out to ten feet deep. Work both baits as slowly as possible to draw strikes. The Jewel football jig bite has gotten a little better over the past week, 3/8 oz. jigs with Paca craw or beaver type trailers have been producing fish close to wood cover on rocky banks.
White River: The deep bite is just as strong in the mid White River as it is in the mid lake. Look for schools of shad holding in 50 feet of water or more near the center of larger creek and just off of points. Once the shad are located the fish should be close by. Once you find the fish a Webb Tail spoon or Chompers Drop shot worms fished just above the fish will result in strikes. Wiggle Warts and Chompers McCutchen spinnerbaits have been producing throughout the White River, look for ledge rock points to be holding most of the fish.
Dam Area: The deep bite has come on very strong on the lower end of the lake in the past week. Much like the rest of the lake shad have moved into the creek arms and schools of spotted bass have followed. Once shad are located drop Webb Tail Spoons, Chompers single tail grubs and Drop Shot worms into and around the shad to draw strikes from spots. The wiggle wart bite is not as strong on the lower end as it is on the rest of the lake, wind blown ledge rock is your best bet.
