Branson Area: Fishing guides continue to fish deep on the lower end of the lake. Most of the fish are being caught on drop shot rigged Chompers, Tightlines UV or ROBO worms fished in an around brush or rock piles 25' – 35' deep on main lake points and flats. Better fish have been in cover closer to deep water. The suspended bite has been slow to develop this year. While smaller fish have been showing up around deep trees and docks the larger fish have not made that move on the Branson end of the lake.
Kimberling City: The bite has been a little stronger in the Kimberling City area than in Branson. Fishing guide trips in the mid lake have produced more fish and bigger fish than on the lower end. Much like the Branson end of the lake the bite has been deep on a drop shot rig fished between 22' – 35' deep on gravel points and flats. Fish in the mid lake seem to be more bait related than cover related, finding schools of threadfin shad has been key to success. Areas holding schools of bait tend to have much more active fish, these fish are much less cover oriented and will feed more aggressively and for a longer period of time. There is a top water bite in the mid lake as well but it is short lived and hit or miss.
James River: Still no rain and no current to speak of in the James River. Without current the usually strong crankbait bite has virtually disappeared. Jewel football jigs and Carolina rigged Tightlines or Chompers creature baits are producing both numbers and quality from the confluence with the White to Cape Fair. Look for gravel or mixed gravel and rock points that drop into deep water to be the most productive areas. Texas rigged 8" – 12' worms have been effective as well in deeper brush or rock piles. Look for cover in the 10' – 20' range to produce.
White River: The topwater bite continues on the White River very early and very late. To take advantage we've been starting our Branson fishing guide trips at 5:45am on the White to make sure we are on the right location at first light. Long tapering points with deep water close by have been the best areas, spooks, Sammies and pop-r's have been the best offerings. Wait for surface activity before making a cast, fish will get honed in on a single shad and putting the bait in front of them is key to draw strikes. Once the sun comes up most of the fish have been caught on a drop shot rig or football jig in these same locations.
