Montana Fly Fishing

Brian McGeehan

Bozeman - Freshwater Fishing Report

Nearly all rivers in Southwest Montana are either currently fishable or within a few days. The salmonflies are here and are now on the Upper Madison between Ruby and Ennis. I have also heard that they are in the Gallatin Canyon and we should see them on the Yellowstone soon. The Lower and Upper Madison have been fishing very well with nymphs, girdle bugs, sculpins and zonkers as a big fly trailed by lightning bugs or soft hackles have been productive. Fish are still near banks but are beginning to venture out. On the Lower Mad they are already in the fast water with the warmer temps. The Ruby is now fishing great and the Yellowstone and Boulder are just days away from fishable levels. We expect some amazing attractor dry fly fishing to be just around the bend. A few are already picking up some fish on dries on the Upper Madison.
