Great early season fishing.

Jefferson River - Freshwater Fishing Report

Look for some great early season fishing on the Jefferson, and other southwest Montana rivers. We were blessed with a good winter for snow, and the snowpack is above normal in most of the drainages in SW Montana. Before runoff (March-April) you can expect some good fishing with large nymphs under a strike indicator. Girdle Bugs (rubber legs) work good, and you can also use a large Flashabuggar. I like to use 2 flies, with the large pattern as the upper fly, and use a Prince on the bottom. ( Or something similar) Hatches are hit and miss during the early season, but you may see some early Mayflies. Snow flies, or midges, are very common. Caddis start up the first part of May, and you can catch this hatch right before high water starts depending on the year.
