Winter Fishing in Namibia

Capt. Simon McGowan
June 18, 2015
Henties Bay - Saltwater Fishing Report

Shore:
Kabeljou continue to be sporadic along the entire coast. A few cob around the 45-55cm size were taken from the kelp near Mile 30 as well as a few from the marks north of Henties Bay but it is hard going to find any numbers. Best marks would be around the Winston in calmer conditions as well as the Mile 30 area.

Galjoen are everywhere and in good numbers. Mile 4 to the Salt Pans has produced lots of Galjoen. The Zeila wreck area, Trappies/Popeye area, Mile 68, Canopy and the Rooi Tow have all produced recently and are all good marks to try for a better size of Galjoen.

Steenbras are about in calmer conditions. Try crab for the larger steenbras but please, collect only enough crab for the session. Mile 72 or Canopy tend to give the best results.

A few decent sized Blacktail are showing from the pump station at Mile 6.

Spotted Gulley Sharks are about but becoming harder to tempt. Bronze Whalers are also getting harder. The odd one is still showing but patience is required. www.seaace.com.na/shore_shark.htm

With so many Galjoen available it's easy to target them and catch lots but please, remember the minimum size limits (30cm) and quotas (10 per person per day) and return anything that does not meet those minimum sizes or is above the quota.

Boats:
Small kabeljou continue to show in very good numbers. Vierkant Klip as well as Mile 14 are fishing very well with a few fish showing at Mile 6. Blacktail from the Pump Station at Mile 6 are possible. With the sea being churned up every few days, the barbel are around all day long and do get in the way of good kabeljou catches.
Sharks continue to show from the boats.
The beach launched areas continue to show excellent fishing when the water is calm enough to launch.

Thanks to Commercial Marine tackle shop in Swakopmund for helping to provide some of the information, especially the Swakopmund area
